Physical Oceanography Laboratory Physical Oceanography Laboratory

Physical Oceanography Laboratory deals with applied and theoretical oceanography, with the aim of studying the termohalinic, hydrodynamic and optical characteristics of the Adriatic Sea. Laboratory workers collect and analyze data of in situ and remote measurements, develop measurement systems in real time, and explore the processes in the sea using hydrodynamic numerical models. In addition, laboratory workers actively participate in educational activities within the framework of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies at the University of Split, University of Zagreb and the University of Dubrovnik.

Laboratory also studies the processes of mass and energy changes in the border layer between the atmosphere and the sea (AdHOC), taking place on sinoptical, seasonal and multiannual scale. The relationship between termohalinic features of the Adriatic and hemisferic meteorological processes is studied, and their joint effect on the thermohalinic circulation and the Adriatic Sea ecosystem is analized.

Activities of the Laboratory include satellite oceanography, as well as measurement of optical properties of the sea that are the result of complex biophysical interactions.

Measurements of dynamic properties of the sea are carried out by anchored and moving current-meters, high-frequency radars , autonomised meteorogical-oceanographical stations on buoys set in open and coastal waters of the Adriatic, and the stations set up on the coastal mainland and ships (link na Bios dva; Liburnija).

Research of unusual phenomena, such as meteorological Tsunamis, are realized with the use of specially designed measurement system, which measures the appropriate parameters on a second-based time scale.

Besides the analysis of measured data, laboratory workers deal with numerical hydrodynamical modeling, and develop and apply models of finite differences with vertical σ (POM model) and the layers by potential levels (Adria model). The results of numerical models are used in the study of different physical processes caused by atmospheric and hydrological activities, and application of models range from modeling the circulation of the whole Adriatic, the Adriatic shelf, the restricted coastal domains, to the motion in small semi-closed coastal pools.

Laboratory participates in a variety of academic, professional and economic projects as well as in international research projects conducted within the framework of research program of the European Union and bilateral cooperation with many countries.
